History

Home History
Most days of the year, even when the weather is bad, visitors can be found walking and cycling along the Manifold and Hamps Valleys between Waterhouses in the south and Hulme End in the north. It is a distance of eight miles and the path they use is covered with tarmac.

It is the trackbed of the leak and manifold Valley light RailwayWhichRun between 1904 and 1930. Several books have been written about the history of the line. Yet for those who are not Arden Railway enthusiast, There are currently no titles in print which satisfies the casual visitor’s curiosity.

Waterhouses Station with the top of the steps which gave access to the platforms from the road. The Signal box is in the background.

Heading for home. A group of people walking from the station at Waterhouses into the village.

Back in the day a wintery day at Waterhouses.

Below: Two postcards of the line passing Brown End Farm at the entrance to the Hamps Valley.
